Small pale cubes: our cheddar bites, up close

Updated

What does freeze dried cheese look like? In our photos, our cheddar bites look like small, near-uniform cubes, pale butter yellow, with sharp square edges, loosely piled together. We describe each piece as about a quarter of a bite. Next to the bag, a single cube looks like a small fraction of its width.

Which color do the bites show in our photos?

Pale butter yellow. That is the color in our photo of the loose pile, where the cubes sit heaped together in much the same shade.

The photo on the front of the bag tells the same story, and it is worth a second look if you are checking the color against the pile. The cubes along the bottom of that bag look pale yellow-cream, and they match the loose pile in color and in shape.

We are describing photographs, and we are staying inside them. We do not explain the color, and we do not claim anything about it beyond what the pictures show. If you came here wondering whether the bites would look like a cheese you already know, the color is the first answer: pale, and on the yellow side of cream.

What shape are the pieces?

Cubes. In our photos they are small and near-uniform, which is our way of saying they look alike without claiming they are identical. The edges are sharp and square, and the pile looks loose, as if the cubes had been tipped out and left where they landed.

All of the cubes in our photos look whole, not broken. That is a statement about the photos, not a promise about any bag you might order. A photograph can only show you a handful, so we say that plainly instead of letting a handful speak for the whole bag.

If you are picturing something ragged or shaved, the photos show the opposite: tidy little cubes with their corners intact. Shape is the only other thing we describe here. We leave out how a piece handles in your fingers, because our photos cannot show that, and we will not guess.

How big does one cube look?

We describe each piece as about a quarter of a bite. That is our own sizing, and we are not going to convert it into a measurement or hold it up against some object, because a quarter of a bite is the description we have and it is enough to work with.

The photos add one thing. Each cube looks small, only a fraction as wide as the bag. There is no hand in any of the frames, so the bag is the only yardstick the pictures give you, and it is a rough one. The two descriptions fit together: our words give you the proportion to a bite, and the photos give you the proportion to the bag.

Our listing describes pieces that start small and break smaller when you snap them. How to break them down, and how small a piece should be for a particular dog, has a page of its own: how small training treats should be picks up from here.

Contains dairy. One 8 ounce bag of the pale cubes this page describes.

What does an open bag of them look like?

We can only describe it by the bag. The cheese comes in an 8 ounce bag and is sold by weight, so we talk about it by weight and never by a count of cubes. Any count we printed would be invented.

What you will see when you open it is what our photos show: pale cubes, loosely piled. A few crumbs near the bottom of a bag are possible, and we do not claim every bag looks like the photo. We claim only that the photos are ours and that we describe them straight.

When you compare, look for the three things we describe: the color, the cube shape, and the size of a piece against the bag. The best place to see them is the product page, where our freeze dried cheddar bites are photographed in the pile and on the bag. They are rewards to hand out beside your dog's meals, and they contain dairy.

If you wonder how cheddar ends up as small cubes like these, how freeze dried cheese is made walks through it.

Questions

Is freeze dried cheddar orange?

In our photos, the pieces look pale butter yellow, so no. We do not explain the color, and we do not say what a given bag will look like. What the pictures show is the cheese: pale yellow cubes, piled loosely, with square edges.

Are all the pieces the same size?

In our photos they look near-uniform, and we describe each one as about a quarter of a bite. That is a description of what the pictures show and of how we size them. We do not promise that every piece in a bag will match.

How many cubes come in a bag?

We give no count. The bag is an 8 ounce bag, sold by weight, and we describe it that way. Our listing describes pieces that start small and break smaller, so we leave the cubes uncounted and give you the weight of the bag.

Does freeze dried cheddar look like the cheddar in my fridge?

We can only answer from our photos, where the cubes are small and pale yellow, with sharp square edges, loosely piled. Shape and color are all we describe, so set that picture beside the cheddar in your fridge and judge the likeness yourself.

Is the color the same in every bag?

We describe what our photos show, which is pale butter yellow, and we make no claim that one bag matches another or differs from it. If you want to compare, the product page has our photos of the cubes and the bag side by side.
