How to use
A pinch of crumbled cheddar on top of the bowl
Updated
A cheese topper for dogs is a small pinch of freeze dried cheddar crumbled over the usual meal and counted as part of the day's treats, not as food. Our listing says the pieces crumble over kibble, so the crumbs at the bottom of the bag finally have a job.
What does a cheese topper change about a meal?
Very little, and that is the idea. The bowl is the same bowl. What changes is the top of it: a scatter of cheddar crumbs sitting on the food where the dog can see and smell them before the first bite.
The meal itself stays the meal. Our cheddar bites are sold as a treat, never as a complete diet, so a topper replaces none of what is underneath. It is an extra, and it is counted like one.
We make no promises about appetite or fussy eaters. Some dogs will take a topper in stride and some will hardly look up, and the only way to find out is to try a pinch at an ordinary mealtime and watch.
How do you crumble freeze dried cheddar evenly?
The pieces are dry, and our listing says they start small and break smaller. That makes crumbling an easy job with no tools.
- Take a piece or two from the bag and reseal it before you do anything else.
- Hold the piece between finger and thumb over the bowl.
- Rub your fingers together and let the crumbs fall across the top of the food.
- Brush your hand over the bowl so any dust joins in.
If your hands are busy, you can press a piece through the closed bag with your thumb and pour out the result. The dust at the very bottom of the bag is already crumbled, so it goes straight over the bowl with no work at all.
An even scatter beats a heap. Spread thin, the cheddar reaches more of the bowl, and the dog gets a taste of it on the first few bites instead of the last.
How much topper still counts as a treat?
A pinch. The topper is part of the day's treats, so it comes out of the same allowance as everything else a dog gets outside meals.
That allowance is a tenth of the day. VCA's guidance caps treats and snacks at roughly a tenth of a dog's calories for the day and leaves the remainder to a complete and balanced diet (VCA, Dog Treats, opened 2026-10-16). The cheddar is a rich treat, so a pinch is plenty and a palmful is a lot.
Our treat budget guide turns the tenth into ounces and has a calculator for your own dog's number. We leave out any count of pieces, because our listing gives no piece size, and crumbs have no count at all. Ounces are the honest unit.
Can a topper go on wet food as well as kibble?
Yes, the crumbs can go on top of either one. Add them just before the bowl goes down rather than ahead of time.
Keep the bag out of that picture. Reseal it and keep it cool and dry, as our listing asks; the dried cheese needs no fridge. A topper takes a pinch, and the rest goes back in the bag, closed, before the bowl goes down. Our storage guide has the habits that keep a bag in good shape.
Questions
Will my dog eat the cheese and leave the kibble?
Some dogs might. If that happens, use a smaller pinch, mix the crumbs through the food instead of leaving them on top, and keep the topper as the occasional extra it is meant to be. We cannot promise how any one dog will react, so watch the first few bowls.
Should I add the topper to every meal?
That is your call and your vet's. The topper counts toward the day's treats, which VCA puts at about a tenth of daily calories, so the more often it appears the smaller each pinch has to be. Using it now and then, rather than at every meal, leaves room for a bigger pinch.
Can I mix the crumbs into a puzzle toy?
Yes, if the toy is made to hold small bits of food. Count them the same way you count a topper, as part of the day's treats. Our listing says the pieces start small and break smaller, so a toy with narrow openings may suit them best.
Is a cheese topper the same as a meal?
No. Our listing says to feed the cheddar as a treat or reward, not as a complete diet. A topper goes on top of food the dog already eats. It adds to a meal and does not stand in for any of it.
What do I do with the dust at the bottom of the bag?
Use it as the topper. The fine crumbs are already the right size, so sprinkle them straight over the bowl. Reseal the bag afterward, since our listing says to keep it cool and dry. Nothing needs saving or sorting, and nothing goes to waste.
Can I use a cheese topper for a puppy?
Our listing names adults and puppies. The cheddar contains dairy, so if you are unsure how your puppy does with dairy, our listing says to ask a veterinarian. Keep the pinch very small, and count it in the day's treats like anything else.
